Right Track Schools Programme

DCF works to support young people who have experienced emotional hardship. This comes in many forms so may mean they have low self-esteem or low-level anxiety, or they may have had a traumatic experience such as having someone close to them diagnosed with cancer. This project is the Right Track School’s Programme.

This is a three-session programme which supports young people in a group, equipping them with the tools they need to live a resilient lifestyle and cope with life’s challenges. The group dynamic also means that they not only receive support from the adult facilitators, but from the social connections with other members of the group, forming a supportive network and building a positive identity within their school community.

The Right Track has been developed based on research from a range of sources, including the Berkeley University Greater Good Science Centre’s research into practical strategies to support well-being and happiness. The programme focuses on tools to build resilience, how to lead a healthy lifestyle, stress management, communication and relationships.

Each session includes:
• Emotional ‘check-ins’ to assess how everyone is feeling.
• Sharing of clear aims and objectives of the session, including creating a shared definition of the topic.
• Ice breakers in relation to the topic in order to build relationships and enhance understanding.
• Differing activities including activity stations that the young people can alternate between, ensuring everyone stays alert and engaged.
• Review of the content and reflection on what has been learnt.
• Debrief and evaluation of both the learning and impact of the content.

In order to offer further support for those young people that may need it, we would also provide opportunities for follow up ‘befriender’ programmes where young people could meet with a youth worker to access a positive recreational activity, while also taking some time out to share thoughts and feelings.
